Meet "Lala". Lala is the nickname for Hillary in Spanish, which is Hilaria. Next week she will celebrate her 90th birthday. When her granddaughter contacted me to take some photos of her in their home, I was honored. Her story is my favorite kind of love story to document.
She was married to her husband for 75 years. They recently celebrated their many years of love together before he passed away last November. When you speak of him, she becomes very emotional.
This was her wedding Bible. Lala is a very devout catholic. Although her vision doesn't allow her to study the Bible like she once did; her family always finds her praying. Her body doesn't allow her to get around like she once did, but you will find her watching mass on the television. It's also important to her that her family follows tradition. Lala is the spiritual leader and "glue" of the family. She prays quietly for her husband. She often wakes up praying and crying for him. He was the love of her life. What an amazing love story. Even as I write these words about Lala and her life, the tears well up in my own eyes.
Lala has much love for her family. You can see it in her eyes and her smile. This image of Lala with her 2 year old great grandson might be one of my favorite photos I have ever captured. The joy on both of their faces as they embrace each other is so precious. They always chuckle when he tries to jump up and meet her lips with his. It's a bit of a struggle for both of them, but always worth it.
As weird as it may sound, I always love to capture details and intimacy in hands and feet. I particularly love this image because of the story it tells. Eighty-seven years between these two. You can see how youthful his skin is against her beautiful aged skin that is evident of living a good, good life.
Lala has 32 grandchildren and another 30 great-grandchildren. What a blessing! And boy do they love their Lala!
I adore generation photos. I love how it was important to this family to capture these moments. They're beautiful, just like Lala!
